FAQs – Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is one of the gentlest and most relaxing therapies we offer – and often one of the most profound. It’s particularly useful for people who haven’t responded well to more forceful approaches, or who are dealing with complex, layered issues involving the nervous system, jaw, or head.

Q: What is craniosacral therapy?

CST is a gentle, hands-on therapy that works with the bones of the skull, spine, and sacrum, and the membrane and fluid system surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The touch is incredibly light – about 5 grams of pressure, roughly the weight of a coin – and the aim is to feel and release subtle restrictions in how those structures are moving.

Q: What does craniosacral therapy feel like?

Most people fall asleep. That’s genuinely the most common reaction. You might feel warmth, a gentle pulsing, or subtle movement in the area being treated. Some people have an emotional release they weren’t expecting. It’s completely different from a standard chiropractic appointment – no cracking, no pressure, nothing forceful at all.

Q: What conditions can craniosacral therapy help?

Chronic headaches and migraines, neck pain, jaw and TMJ disorders, post-concussion syndrome, chronic pain that hasn’t responded well to other things, and stress-related nervous system dysregulation are the main areas. We also use it for birth trauma in infants. It’s often most useful alongside regular chiropractic rather than as a replacement for it.

Q: Is craniosacral therapy the same as chiropractic?

No. Standard chiropractic is about joints and muscles. CST works with the craniosacral system using very light touch – quite different in feel and mechanism. Dr Miki trained in both and often uses elements of each in the same session, depending on what the patient needs.

Q: Who performs craniosacral therapy at Dynamic Chiropractic?

All CST is done by Dr Miki. She trained in it post-graduation alongside neurokinetic therapy, active release technique, dry needling, and advanced jaw/TMJ work. It’s not something most Brisbane chiropractors offer.

Q: Is craniosacral therapy safe?

Yes. The pressure involved is minimal – it’s about the gentlest thing we offer. It’s suitable for infants, children, pregnant women, and people who can’t tolerate more forceful treatment. We still take a full health history first to make sure it’s appropriate for you.

Q: How many craniosacral therapy sessions will I need?

Some people come in once and feel a marked difference. Others do 4–8 sessions to work through something more layered. We generally use CST as part of a broader treatment plan rather than as the only thing we’re doing.

Q: What should I expect at my first craniosacral therapy appointment?

Your first appointment is 30 minutes,  Miki will run through your history, then work with light handholds along your spine, pelvis, and skull. Most people leave feeling noticeably calmer than when they came in. It’s a strange thing to describe until you’ve experienced it.

Q: Can craniosacral therapy help with jaw (TMJ) pain?

Yes – this is one of the main reasons people seek Miki out specifically. The temporal bones of the skull and the jaw are closely connected in the craniosacral system. CST combined with targeted TMJ chiropractic work tends to get good results for jaw pain, clicking, grinding, restricted opening, and headaches that originate from the jaw.
